Этой демонстрации, опирающейся лишь на реальные и всем хорошо известные факты (безработица среди молодежи, вынужденная разлука, общая монотонность общества в период застоя), удается затронуть зрителя, главным образом - мягкой интонацией и замечательно точной и чуткой работой с актерами. Режиссер показывает людей во всей их наготе, не пользуясь и не прикрываясь никакой идеологией. Кроме того, в глубине своей фильм тесно связан с мощным документалистским направлением, которым отмечена вся история английского кинематографа и которое в любые времена стремится показать в едином движении проблемы и страдания людей, при этом уважительно, но сдержанно подчеркивая их чувство собственного достоинства.
